In the offline world, people with visual impairments have various possibilities to get an impression of their surroundings: The sense of touch creates images in the brain. Haptic perception is therefore indispensable - but online there are thus far only a few possibilities to display graphics as tactile structures. Image descriptions are often used. But what if a view cannot be put into words? Prof. Dr. Bastian Rapp from the University of Freiburg is developing the hardware for a tactile display. The engineer wants to build a tablet with a changeable and tactile surface that enables the visually impaired to feel a map or a mathematical function with their fingers, for example.
