Highly conformable implants for neural applications

New publication of the Laboratory for Biomedical Microtechnology in Nature Microsystems & Nanoengineering

In their latest publication, Thomas Stieglitz and colleagues from Freiburg and Ulm report the development of novel microfabrication process for the fabrication of neural chip-in-foil interfaces. In this process, miniaturized cubes are embedded in a flexible polymer substrate to improve the adaption of the implant to the mechanical environment in the body. The goal is to increase biocompatibility and the ability to cover larger areas of the brain. Therefore, aspects such as the possibility of long-term use and a felxible design in terms of implant size and arrangement of chips were included in the development.
