Wolfgang-Gentner-Award goes to scientist of the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK)

At the ceremony of the Opening of the Academic Year 2023/24 of the University of Freiburg on Oct 18, 2023, Rector Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein awarded Dr. Jasmin-Clara Bürger for her dissertation.

Dr. Jasmin-Clara Bürger was awarded the Wolfgang-Gentner-Award for her dissertation in Microsystems Engineering. She graduated with her dissertation about "Nanowires: From process control towards applications" at the Laboratory for Nanotechnology (Prof. Dr. Margit Zacharias) from the University of Freiburg with the final grade summa cum laude. The thesis deals with the precise process control and materials characterization for the targeted synthesis of promising freestanding and laterally aligned tin oxide nanowires. Furthermore, the application of tin oxide nanowires and heterostructures as lithium-ion battery anode was investigated electrochemically and electron microscopically.

"This dissertation shows in an impressive way how nanostructures can be realized in a controlled way with an in-depth understanding of processes and how a comprehension of materials at the nanoscale can drive the development of applications such as Li batteries and biosensors," says Prof. M. Zacharias, Head of the Laboratory for Nanotechnology at the Faculty of Engineering and supervisor of the PhD thesis.

The data was collected at the University of Freiburg and in national-wide collaborations, and partly during a 6-month research stay of Dr. Bürger in the research group of Prof. Frances M. Ross at MIT (Cambridge/Boston, MA, USA). The research stay at MIT in 2021 was financed by a scholarship within the framework of the Fulbright doctoral programme.

The Wolfgang-Gentner-Award is awarded annually by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Freiburg for a dissertation in the fields of Microsystems Engineering and Computer Science. It is donated by the Volksbank Freiburg and endowed with 1250 €. This year's Wolfgang-Gentner-Award in computer science was awarded to Dr. Maria Kalweit for her dissertation on "Deep Representations of Sets".
