Celebrating 10 years of empowering women

Anniversary event “Flying to new heights with kite-mentoring”

On October 12 and 13, 2023, the "kite-mentoring" program at the University of Freiburg celebrates 10 years of empowering female career researchers. The eument-net (European network of mentoring programs in academia) will support this celebration with a joint international conference in Freiburg for its members and all interested parties.

On the first day of the conference, two keynote speakers will discuss the about gender equality and mentoring in science:

Prof. Dr. Tomas Brage (Lund University, Sweden)
“Gender bias in academia - a threat to academic values”

Prof. Dr. Marieke van den Brink (Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands)
“Mentoring in higher education – supporting career development and organizational change”

The event will be moderated by Colette Schrodi (European Science Foundation Strasbourg, France).

The coordinator of the program Dr. Evelyn Rusdea will briefly present an overview of ten years of empowering women in STEM by “kite-mentoring”. During flash talks different perspectives of mentees, mentors, alumnae and from the University are reflected.


The venue is the IMBIT building (Intelligent Machine-Brain Interfacing Technology), Georges-Köhler Allee 201, 79110 Freiburg, Germany.

About kite-mentoring:

kite-mentoring is an English-language mentoring program at the University of Freiburg initiated by the Cluster of Excellence BrainLinks-BrainTools in 2013. The program developed so successfully that it is now supported by other programs and institutions at the University of Freiburg. Currently, female PhD students and female postdocs in physics, chemistry, pharmacy, mathematics, computer science, engineering, environmental sciences, biology and medicine can apply to participate in kite-mentoring.

The kite-mentoring program consists of four pillars: mentoring, training, networking and coaching. In addition also visit to industry companies and career fairs are organized. The offers of the program are tailored to the needs of the group and participation is on voluntary basis.
