Eva Mayr-Stihl and Robert Mayr young talent awards

Scientists of the Department of Sustainable Systems Engineering (INATECH) are awarded again

By awarding young talent awards at the University of Freiburg, the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation supports young scientists for outstanding achievements at Freiburg's INATECH, the Institute for Sustainable Technical Systems.

The Eva Mayr-Stihl Young Talent Award is handed out for a particularly good dissertation. This year it goes to Dr. Dimitry Bogachuk for his work entitled “Understanding and Improving Perovskite Photovoltaic Devices with Carbon-based Back-electrodes”. In his excellent doctorate he is working on the development of photovoltaic perovskite solar cells, which have great potential to become the next generation of photovoltaic systems. To achieve this, however, efficiency and stability must be improved - this is what Dr. Dimitry Bogachuk researches on.

"It is impressive how comprehensively Dmitry Bogachuk handles the topic from the microscopic understanding to issues of sustainability, and what excellent sustainability issues, and what excellent results he has achieved," says Prof. Stefan Glunz, the first reviewer of the paper.

Hannes Geist, this year's recipient of the Robert Mayr Young Talent Award, dealt with remanufacturing in his excellent master's thesis, i.e. the production of economically and ecologically superior new products made of used products and some new parts. In his work, he creates a new scientific approach to develop the theoretical basis for how new products can be optimized in the design phase with a view to remanufacturing.

"I am proud of our former SSE student and now PhD candidate at INATECH M.Sc. Hannes Geist. He has produced an excellent master's thesis in collaboration with several industrial partners and has already been able to publish his results. I am looking forward to the further development of Hannes," reports supervising professor and now PhD supervisor Frank Balle.

Susann Pfeiffer, responsible for science and research projects at the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation, presented the prizes together with the Rector of the University of Freiburg, Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein, as part of the event to open the academic year 2023/24.

About INATECH:
INATECH is a cooperation between the Technical Faculty of the University of Freiburg and the five Freiburg Fraunhofer Institutes and is concerned with the research and development of engineering solutions that are oriented towards the current challenges of sustainability. It covers the entire spectrum from basic research to industrial application. The Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation supported INATECH in the founding phase and is supporting a named professorship there.
