Sustainable solutions for a green future

Renewable Energy Day in the Green City Freiburg

On 4 December 2023, the "Renewable Energy Day" took place in Freiburg, organised by the Center for Renewable Energy - ZEE at the University of Freiburg.

The event brought together esteemed experts, researchers, and industry professionals from around Germany. It aimed to facilitate knowledge exchange and foster collaborations to accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy future.

The academic event on renewable energy was a resounding success, serving as a platform for the exchange of ideas, expertise, and knowledge in the field. The event aimed to cover the significance of renewable energy sources in addressing climate change and paving the way for a sustainable future can be effectively communicated to a wider audience.

“With the Renewable Energy Day Freiburg we have tried a new meeting format - only two talks and very long poster sessions with a new poster format - with the aim to foster strong personal interactions between scientists and younger participants, including students and pupils, says Prof. Dr. Moritz Diehl (Managing Director of the ZEE) and adds „The day was a success, and I am extremely happy with the result! Many participants told me enthusiastically about the new insights they have gained and the new contacts they made inside the university, and beyond. Several people asked if we can organize such an event again next year, and I will discuss this idea my colleagues at the Center for Renewable Energy (ZEE) and am confident that we will do it again.”

Highlights:

  1. Keynote Speeches: Two renowned experts from the renewable energy sector – Stephan Brabeck from the Hamburg-based high-altitude wind energy company SkySails GmbH and Sebastian Sladek from Elektrizitäswerke Schönau (EWS) – shared their insights on the importance of renewable energy in tackling climate change, reducing carbon emissions, and meeting energy demands sustainably.
  1. Poster Exhibitions: Exhibits showcased latest renewable energy technologies, allowing participants to experience the latest advancements in solar panels, wind turbines, and energy-efficient systems. The 20 posters were prepared and presented professors, postdocs and PhD students from diverse disciplines, for example from the Faculty of the Environment and Natural Resources, the Faculty of Engineering, or the Faculty of Economics and Behavioral Sciences, covering topics ranging from technology and geography to psychology and politics.
  1. Networking Opportunities: The event provided ample opportunities for networking, fostering collaborations among attending researchers, industry professionals, to drive collective action towards renewable energy implementation.

The ZEE thanks all the participants, organizers, and contributors for their valuable insights, dedication, and commitment towards harnessing the power of renewable energy for a better world.
