New Laboratory Building: Fraunhofer IAF celebrates groundbreaking ceremony

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF will be extended by a new energy efficient laboratory building. Fraunhofer president Prof. Dr. Reimund Neugebauer will perform the groundbreaking ceremony today in attendance of representatives of politics, economy and science

Fraunhofer IAF is growing: new laboratories will emerge with an area of about 1000 m2.

In the new building of about 1000 m2, scientists will study compact lasers and miniaturized sensors.

“The new laboratory building will not only provide new space for research, but also allow a closer collaboration of scientists concentrating on the development of technology to detect contaminations in gas and liquids”, explains Prof. Dr. Oliver Ambacher, director of Fraunhofer IAF. “Due to the growing need for laboratory and office space, Fraunhofer IAF will be modernized and extended during the coming years. The construction of the new laboratory building is a first big step.” The budget of the institute rose from 20.5 million to 30.2 million between 2007 and 2012, while the number of staff grew from 193 to 278. To satisfy the demand for new semiconductor technologies, the institute will continue expanding in the coming years.

Research laboratories for innovative semiconductors

The research in the field of semiconductor technologies conducted at the Fraunhofer IAF places high demands on the design and facilities of the new laboratory building. The sensitive experiments in optics require a very vibration-resistant construction. Therefore, a solid cement build was chosen, which will simultaneously satisfy the necessity of energy efficiency thanks to high heat isolation. The costs of 6.0 million Euros will be covered half by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and half by the Ministry of Finance and Economics of Baden-Württemberg. In the southern part of the institute’s site, the new two-story laboratory will be joined to the existing building. The construction period will last for about two years.

In the future, the scientists in the new building will develop technologies such as infrared lasers for the detection of explosives as well as for medical diagnostics and therapy. The new laboratories will also be used for the development of sensors which detect dangerous chemical substances in the air or in drinking water.
