For his Poster on “Non-contact single cell printing for single cell real-time PCR", Fabian Stumpf (HSG-IMIT) and his colleagues from the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK), the research cluster BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies and BioFluidix were awarded the best poster award at the Biosensors conference.
Three members of the Gisela and Erwin Sick Laboratory for Micro-optics are recipients of the 2013 Rudolf Kingslake Medal and Prize awarded by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.
High blood pressure is the greatest health risk worldwide behind smoking and alcohol consumption. In Germany, around 25 percent of the population suffers from arterial hypertension, as the condition is referred to in medical circles. The microsystems engineers Dr. Dennis Plachta and Prof. Dr. Thomas Stieglitz from the Laboratory of Biomedical Microtechnology at the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) of the University of Freiburg teamed up with the neurosurgeons Dr. Mortimer Gierthmühlen and Prof. Dr. Josef Zentner from the Medical Center – University of Freiburg to develop a new cuff equipped with electrodes that can lower blood pressure without causing side effects.
Low pressure plasma polymerization is one domain of expertise of Prof. Dr. Urban’s Laboratory for Sensors. During his PhD thesis Michael Bergmann developed a process to coat contact lens systems for an industrial cooperation partner.

The Senate of the University of Freiburg has elected two new part-time vice rectors: Gisela Riescher (Faculty of Humanities) will be responsable for academic integrity, equal opprtunity and diversity, Margit Zacharias (Faculty of Engineering, Department of Microsystems Engineering) for technolgy transfer and innovation.
A recent article in "Lab on a Chip" describing an optofluidic optical router developed by the Gisela and Erwin Sick Chair of Micro-optics in collaboration with CSIC in Barcelona, Spain, was featured as a "Research Highlight" by Nature Photonics (On-chip router,” Nature Photonics, vol. 8, p. 85, 2014). The fully integrated router relies solely on electrically-movable liquid-liquid interfaces for switching optical signals and is based on micromachined glass and polymer materials.
Thomas van Oordt et al. from the Lab-on-a-Chip division describe the effect of ultrasonic welding parameters on the peel strength of polyethylene films and provide a practical guideline for a systematic adjustment of welding parameters.
Freiburg researchers have developed electrodes that help amputees to grasp at objects
Scientists of IMTEK and HSG-IMIT are developing a fully automated system, which can identify sepsis in infants within hours instead of days.
Dr. Sandeep Kumar Vashist, Laboratory for MEMS applications, IMTEK has been invited to serve as the Editorial Board Member (in Chemical Sciences) of ‘Scientific Reports’, a highly reputed journal by Nature Publishing Group.

On Monday, 9th of December, the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) of the University of Freiburg held its annual Research Day.
Computer science is a dynamic field of study. It continues to develop at a rapid speed, and new visions are always on the horizon. At the Department of Computer Science, our goal is to transform our visions into tomorrow’s solutions.
The Faculty of Engineering wishes to congratulate the students chosen for the Christoph-Rüchardt scholarship 2013: Jan Burchard (Informatik), Christoph Gissler (Informatik), Abinaya Krishnaraja (Microsystems Engineering), Tina Preisinger (Mikrosystemtechnik) und Annelie Schiller (Mikrosystemtechnik).
Prof. Dr. Moritz Diehl has been appointed as a professor for the newly installed Chair of Systems Theory at IMTEK and has taken over this position at the beginning of the winter semester 2013/14. He is an expert in Control Engineering and Optimisation and worked as a Professor for Optimisation in Engineering at KU Leuven/Belgium where he headed the "Optimisation in Engineering Center" OPTEC.
Researchers of the microactuators laboratory have published a paper on novel 3D solenoidal on-chip wire bonded microtransformers in JMM.
Researchers at the chair for microactuators developed a new type of adaptive “1D-axicon” that delivers a tunable optical line-pattern.
New actuation modes for free-form out-of-plane displacement of piezo membranes have been published by researchers of the IMTEK microactuators laboratory.
