Wireless power transfer by means of acoustic waves

Compared to the electromagnetic approach, acoustic wireless power transfer has not attracted so much attention and has remained largely undeveloped until recently. Therefore, the project "Ultrasound energy transmission" aims to understand and optimize the inner physics of an acoustic power transfer link with an special focus on the piezoelectric receivers.
In "Analytic model for ultrasound energy receivers and their optimal electric loads", an analytic model for a thickness-mode resonating receiving piezoelectric disc is presented, in which the front and back acoustic boundary conditions can be defined independently. With this model, the expressions of the "zero reflection", which supress all reflections and standing waves, and of the "power maximization" optimal electric loads, which maximize the power transmission, are derived.
In the second paper "Analytic model for ultrasound energy receivers and their optimal electric loads II: Experimental validation", the analytic model and the expressions of the optimal electric loads are validated with experiments in water. Results show the importance of attaching the optimal electric load to the receiver, so that an optimized acoustic power transfer link is achieved.
Finally, the efficiency expressions of a piezoelectric receiver with the optimal loads attached are derived from the analytic model in "Optimizing piezoelectric receivers for acoustic power transfer applications". In this paper, the key variables that influence the performance of the receivers are identified. New experiments with different transducers showed a good agreement with the measurements, thus further validating the analytic model previously developed.
