IMTEK researcher wins Best Paper Award

Mark Schepperle receives the "Best Paper Award" at the MHMT'23 Conference in Lisbon

Mark Schepperle, PhD student from the Laboratory for the Design of Microsystems has been awarded the "Best Paper Award" at the 8th World Congress on Momentum, Heat and Mass Transfer (MHMT'23), held in Lisbon, Portugal from 26-28 March. The award was conferred to the presenting author of the paper that received the highest rank during the peer review and by the respected session chairs.

The winning paper, titled "Flow Boiling Instabilities and Single-Phase Pressure Drop in Rectangular Microchannels with Different Inlet Restrictions," was supervised by Professor Peter Woias, and explores the instabilities of flow boiling and the single-phase pressure drop in rectangular microchannels.

"The origin of this article is a DFG-funded cooperative project entitled ProMiSe, where we develop, together with partners of the KIT, Karlsruhe, innovative sensors and actuators for the sensing, manipulation and control of flow boiling in microchannels. Potential applications of this technology are high-performance phase-change cooling systems as well as high-performance steam generation in chemical micro process engineering." says Professor Woias.

"It's a humbling experience to receive this recognition from a panel of experts in my field. I vividly remember attending this conference for the first time last year, and feeling incredibly intimidated by the depth of knowledge and experience that surrounded me. But I knew then that I wanted to dedicate myself to my work and trust the process. And now, just one year later, I am honored to have received this award“, says Mark Schepperle.

As part of the award, Mark Schepperle gets a free publication in the Journal of Fluid Flow, Heat and Mass Transfer (JFFHMT), a high-quality, peer-reviewed journal where every article will be reviewed by several experts in the field. Additionally, he will receive a 25% discount for the MHMT'24 conference.

The Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Microsystems Engineering congratulate Mark Schepperle on his outstanding performance at the MHMT'23 conference.
