COVID-19 spurs wave of innovative diagnostics

Recent News article in Nature Biotechnology highlights two different research activities of Dr. Can Dincer.



A News article "COVID-19 spurs wave of innovative diagnostics" published recently in Nature Biotechnology highlights two of the current research activities/ideas, including multiplexed CRISPR-Biosensor and wearable paper-based breath sensors, of Dr. Can Dincer from FIT and IMTEK – Laboratory for Sensors (Prof. Gerald Urban) for fighting the Corona pandemic. Dincer says “Glad to be mentioned as a junior researcher along with great scientists from all over the word, and also University of Freiburg as the only institution from Germany!”.

CRISPR‐powered electrochemical microfluidic multiplexed biosensor (CRISPR-Biosensor X) allows nucleic‐acid‐amplification‐free detection of different RNAs simultaneously. Upon recognition of its target, the activated enzyme (Cas13a) cleaves reporter RNAs in its surroundings, resulting in a decrease of the measured electrochemical signals. The CRISPR‐Biosensor X offers a low‐cost, easily scalable, specific, and target amplification‐free (i.e., rapid and easy‐to‐use) tool for multiplexed on‐site nucleic acid diagnostics.

The electrochemical paper-based breath sensor is the first attempt toward continuous monitoring of breath biochemistry using a low-cost and disposable wearable sensor, which can be attached onto any type of face masks. It offers a great potential for accessible wearable testing of the infectious diseases like COVID-19, integrating sampling, collection and analysis of the sample into a single device.
