H. Ceren Ates and Dr. Can Dincer were invited to write a News & Views for Nature Electronics, about “Wearable devices for the detection of COVID-19”.



During the current pandemic, a need for rapid and accessible tools for the detection of early signs of the disease comes in sight to control the spread of the disease, until an effective vaccination strategy is available.

Wearables can be used to monitor the variations in the physiological state of the body, a prerequisite for the distributed proactive healthcare. Heart rate, sleep and activity alterations obtained by wearable devices together with biometric data of the individuals could be a potential database to devise methods for early detection of potential COVID-19 patients. Reporting in Nature Biomedical Engineering, Michael Snyder, Xiao Li and colleagues utilized such data from 32 infected individuals from a pool of nearly 5300 participants for pre-symptomatic detection of COVID-19. Reporting in Nature Medicine, Giorgio Quer and colleagues further incorporated self-reported symptoms to improve the predictive accuracy of the model used.

The News & Views “Wearable devices for the detection of COVID-19” published in the January issue of Nature Electronics, H. Ceren Ates and colleagues provide their expert view on these two works by (i) discussing their impact and limitations, (ii) underlying the potential of wearables for the individualized diagnostics and (iii) overviewing how wearables, going beyond the physical sensing, could change our way to tackle such global crisis in near future.
