The research on the tunable 1D-axicon, a so-called Fresnel mirror, was developed by researchers at the chair for Microactuators in cooperation with the Max-Born-Institute for nonlinear optics and short-pulse spectroscopy in Berlin. It delivers a sharp, non-diffracting line-pattern that can be used for direct nanomachining of laser-induced-periodic surface structures (LIPSS). It is therefore a potential candidate for bringing direct laser nanomachining from the lab to the industrial level. The research was published in September 2013 in the Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering (JMM) by Jens Brunne, Matthias Wapler, Ruediger Grunwald and Ulrike Wallrabe and was now chosen by IOP to be included in the special selection IOPselect.
