The start-up project “SpinDiag” by Gregor Czilwik, Mark Keller, Dominique Kosse, Dr. Michael Lauk, Dr. Daniel Mark, Frank Schwemmer, and Oliver Strohmeier won first prize in the “Innovations from Science and Universities” category. The planned spin-off is the product of a partnership between the industry-oriented research institute Hahn-Schickard and the IMTEK Laboratory for MEMS Applications. It offers a mobile diagnostic platform doctors can use to determine within 30 minutes whether their patients are carrying germs or resistant bacteria. This enables them to improve treatment and undertake hygienic measures at hospitals to protect other patients from infection.

Another business plan from the partnership between Hahn-Schickard and the Laboratory for MEMS Applications won the audience award for the best pitch as well as third prize in the “Environment” category: the start-up project “DMD” by Matthias Breitwieser, Matthias Klingele, and Severin Vierrath. The three scientists developed a new concept for membrane production that has the potential to lower the cost of manufacturing fuel cells.

The business plan competition StartInsLand is being held this year for the second time. It is organized jointly by the University of Freiburg, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg, and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) for the Southern Upper Rhine. The competition is divided into two phases: It began with a concept phase in spring 2015 and has now reached its culmination in the awarding of prizes to the best business plans. The Entrepreneurial Office of the University of Freiburg organized events and further training programs to accompany the competition. It is scheduled to be held again in 2017.
