A paper on Monte Carlo Localization: Efficient Position Estimation for Mobile Robots (1999) from cluster speaker Prof. Dr. Wolfram Burgard alongside co-authors Frank Dellaert, Dieter Fox and Sebastian Thrun, was chosen winner of the 2017 AAAI Classic Paper award. It is the second time in a row that Burgard receives this prestigious honor: In 2016, his paper about The Interactive Museum Tour-Guide Robot (1998) also got the award.

The Classic Paper award of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) honors the authors of papers deemed most influential, chosen from a specific conference year. To win the award, papers have to have, for instance, started a new research area, led to important applications or answered a long-standing research question. In the case of the 1999 paper, it was a very efficient probabilistic algorithm based on the Monte Carlo method that afterwards became to be applied in many mobile robot systems.
