Meeting and networking together in Freiburg

The Department of Sustainable Systems Engineering (INATECH) at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Freiburg welcomes the committee members of the German Society for Materials Science e.V. (DGM)

Despite it being a rainy evening, a cheerful mood prevailed at the eve meeting of the committee members of the expert committee Hybrid Materials and Structures and the committee members of the workgroup “Mixed Compounds with Aluminium” in the beer garden.

The lively gathering on the evening of September 7 in Freiburg also attracted the attention of a waitress, who asked, "Who are you, students, doctoral students or professors?", as the mixed group included all three.

On September 8, the participants visited the Walter-and-Ingeborg-Herrmann-Chair for Power Ultrasonics and Engineering of Functional Materials at INATECH on the invitation of Prof. Frank Balle.

Six presentations were heard on the topic of joining of hybrid materials, from composites and metals to aluminium and metallic glass. The focus was on current developments in the field of manufacturing and testing methods as well as efficient recycling strategies. Aspects ranging from impact loads and long-term fatigue to high joint strengths and the de-bonding of hybrid structures were extensively discussed.

In the future, the technical committee will be headed by Prof. Joachim Hausmann (Leibniz Institute for Composite Materials, Kaiserslautern) alongside Dr. Daniel Hülsbusch (Vanderlande Industries, Mönchengladbach). Prof. Axel von Hehl (University of Siegen) will chair the working group on mixed compounds with aluminium in future. The next meeting is planned for May 22.-23, 2023 in Kassel. Further information will follow.

The DGM office would like to thank Prof. Frank Balle and his team for organizing the meeting and Prof. Hausmann for conducting it.
